Luxury Master Bathroom Remodel in McLean VA

Our team at NextDay Remodeling just completed a high-end master bathroom remodeling project in McLean, VA. We took the space down to the framing to resolve a layout that felt closed off and dark. This bathroom renovation required moving major plumbing stacks and adding architectural elements that weren't there before. Check out the photos below to see the dramatic shift in light and space.

The Challenge: A Dark and Divided Space

The original setup had a massive obstacle - a dedicated toilet room built right in the center of the floor. This wall blocked the entire line of sight. It also left the room feeling dim because the original space lacked a large window. The configuration effectively cut the square footage in half (making a large room feel tiny). Beyond these design flaws, the plumbing was outdated, and the subfloor needed a total replacement.

What We Did

  • Full Demolition & Subfloor: We performed a "to-the-studs" demolition—stripping every wall and removing the central toilet enclosure. This included a total subfloor replacement to make sure we had a perfectly level and stable foundation.
  • Architectural Lighting: Our team cut into the exterior wall to install a new, large window. This addition now floods the space with natural light.
  • Custom Re-piping: We rerouted the main sewer and water lines (relocating the primary plumbing stacks). This allowed us to move the toilet into a private water closet and position the new tub as a focal point.
  • Advanced Waterproofing & Comfort: We installed a high-tech electric radiant floor heating system (heated floor), which was followed by professional-grade waterproofing. Using a high-quality waterproofing membrane is a standard for us—ensuring the structure remains protected from moisture for decades.
  • Ventilation Upgrade: We installed a new, high-efficiency ventilation system. This powerful yet quiet fan effectively manages humidity (preventing mold growth and keeping the air fresh).
  • Frameless Glass Shower: Our crew built a custom corner shower with a sleek glass enclosure—featuring a built-in accessory niche and matte black dual-shower fixtures.
  • Furniture & Finishing: We installed two independent, chocolate-toned vanities with quartz countertops. A modern freestanding acrylic tub now sits under the new window.
  • Lighting Design: We curated a multi-layer lighting plan (including a designer chandelier over the tub). Vertical LED sconces were added to provide the best possible light for the vanity area.

Permits and Code Compliance

This project was fully permitted through Fairfax County for structural, plumbing, and electrical work. Every phase of the job was checked by a local building official. Having these inspections performed at the correct intervals confirms that the new drainage and electrical circuits meet modern safety standards. Our team makes certain that all work is verified by the county to maintain the long-term value of the home.

The Final Result

The transformation is stark - turning a dark, boxed-in room into an airy retreat. The freestanding tub now sits directly under the new window. It serves as a beautiful focal point. The dark vanities provide a sharp contrast against the light tile (adding a modern edge to the space). By prioritizing light and flow, we created a master bathroom remodel that adds real value to this McLean home.
