Open Concept Kitchen Remodel with Wall Removal in Alexandria, VA

Walk into this kitchen today and you'd never guess it used to be one of the most closed-off rooms in the house. This open concept kitchen remodel in Alexandria, VA is a clear example of what's possible when structural know-how meets thoughtful design. Part of a larger whole home remodeling project, it started as a cramped, dated layout and evolved into a fully integrated living space — a kitchen renovation that genuinely changed how the whole main floor feels and functions.

The Structural Challenge

The original kitchen had real problems and not just cosmetic ones. A massive load-bearing wall cut it off from the dining room entirely, keeping the space dark and disconnected from the rest of the home. Beyond the layout, the plumbing and electrical systems were outdated and undersized for modern appliances. Decades of settling had also left the floors and walls noticeably uneven (a common issue in older Alexandria homes), which meant a full gut was the only way to get a truly level, plumb base for new cabinetry and finishes.

Scope of Work

  • The structural work came first. We removed the load-bearing wall and installed a heavy-duty LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) beam to support the floor above. This was the ideal solution for opening up the entire main floor without compromise. Once the structure was secured, everything else followed a clear, seamless sequence.
  • For flooring, we installed 4" Red Oak hardwood throughout, sanded and finished on-site to flow seamlessly between the kitchen and dining areas. No thresholds, no transitions. Just one continuous surface from room to room.
  • Cabinetry is where the design really comes together. We went with a two-tone layout: White Shaker-style uppers paired with Soft Gray lowers, all fitted with matte black hardware. The contrast is clean without being stark. Countertops are high-grade white quartz with marble-style veining — durable, low-maintenance, and a strong visual anchor for the space. The linear mosaic tile backsplash ties the whole surface treatment together.
  • Electrical work included a full panel upgrade, dedicated circuits for each major appliance, recessed LED can lights for general illumination, and decorative Edison-bulb pendants over the island. Both functional and layered.
  • On the mechanical side, we replaced all water and sewer supply lines and installed a high-capacity range hood ventilation system sized for professional-grade cooking.
  • After structural work, we hung moisture-resistant drywall throughout (properly blocked, taped, and finished to a smooth surface) then painted the entire space in a warm neutral that works with both the oak floors and the white cabinetry.

Permits and Code Compliance

Every phase of this project was permitted and inspected. Structural, electrical, plumbing — all pulled through the City of Alexandria and signed off by city inspectors at each required stage. That's standard practice at NextDay Remodeling, not an upsell. Northern Virginia building codes exist for good reasons, and we follow them on every job, every time.

The Final Result

The finished kitchen is exactly what this home needed. Removing that wall didn't just add square footage, it changed the entire character of the main floor. Natural light moves through the space now. The kitchen connects to the dining area the way it should. The red oak floors, white quartz, and gray cabinetry work together in a way that feels refined without being fussy. More than aesthetics, this kitchen makeover added real value and day-to-day functionality to a family home.
