This whole-floor home remodel in Chevy Chase, MD is one of those projects that reminds us why we love what we do. The homeowners came to NextDay Remodeling, a general contractor, with a clear vision: tear down the walls (literally) and create a bright, open living space centered around a stunning modern kitchen. What started as a main floor divided into three separate rooms turned into exactly the kind of open, functional space the family had been wanting for years.
Starting With the Hard Part
The main floor was originally divided into three separate rooms by two partition walls. One of them was load-bearing, which meant load-bearing wall removal was the first (and most complex) item on the work list. We brought in a structural engineer, worked through the design together, and landed on a 26-foot double LVL beam with staggered steel plates on the interior. That's a serious piece of structural work (the kind of thing that doesn't show once the drywall goes up, but holds everything together for decades).
Once the beam was set and the walls came down, the space opened up completely. No columns. No awkward transitions. Just one clean, connected floor plan running from the front of the house all the way through to the living area.
The Kitchen
With the space cleared, we started the kitchen remodel from scratch. The layout centers around a
large island with a white quartz countertop and bold navy blue
cabinetry below. It's a strong design choice that anchors the whole room
without overpowering it. The perimeter cabinets are custom shaker-style
in a warm white-gray tone, paired with a herringbone tile backsplash
that runs the full length behind the range.
Appliances are all
stainless steel — built-in range, refrigerator, and a wall-mounted range
hood that ties into the backsplash tile nicely. Three black pendant
lights hang over the island at a height that works for both task
lighting and the overall look of the space. Island seating fits four
comfortably, which matters when the kitchen is this open to the rest of
the house.
Flooring and Finish Work
New hardwood flooring runs through the entire main floor. Keeping one continuous material across the kitchen, dining, and living zones makes the space feel larger and more intentional. We also added crown molding along the ceiling perimeter and refreshed all the trim and paint throughout. The details are what pull a remodel like this together at the end.
How It Came Together
Looking at the framing photos and comparing them to the finished space, the scope of this project is clear. What was once three separate rooms is now a single, open, well-designed floor. The structural work made it possible. The kitchen design made it worth doing.
