High-end Kitchen Remodeling in Falls Church, VA, Cofer Rd – Project #48

What happens when a pro design-build team is given the freedom to completely rethink the heart of a home? This project in Falls Church, VA is the answer. As part of a comprehensive full home remodeling project, NextDay Remodeling was tasked with reimagining the entire first floor, starting with the kitchen remodel. What was once a cramped, isolated room cut off from the rest of the living space became a breathtaking open-concept environment where the kitchen, dining room, and living room now flow together as one cohesive, light-filled space.

Scroll down to explore the details of this transformation and don't miss the photo gallery below to see every stunning detail up close.

From Frustration to Vision: The Challenge

This project wasn't just about updating a kitchen, it was about fixing a floor plan that simply didn't work for modern family life. The homeowners came to us with a clear set of pain points and goals:

  • Closed-off, cramped layout: The kitchen was fully enclosed by walls, making it feel small, dark, and disconnected from the rest of the home. Cooking meant being isolated from guests and family in the adjacent rooms.
  • A wall that couldn't come down — until it could: One of the two walls separating the kitchen from the living and dining areas was a load-bearing wall. The homeowners wanted it gone, but needed a team with the structural expertise to do it safely and to code.
  • Outdated infrastructure: The existing plumbing, electrical, and ventilation systems were undersized, aging and incompatible with the high-end appliances and modern kitchen performance the clients envisioned.
  • No connection to the outdoors: Despite having backyard potential, the kitchen and dining area had no direct access to the outside, no natural light on the work surface, no indoor-outdoor flow.
  • Desire for a true entertainer's kitchen: The clients wanted more than a functional cooking space. They envisioned a kitchen that could anchor the entire social life of the home — with an island for gathering, a dining area for dinner parties, and a wet bar for entertaining.

How We Built It: Scope of Work

This was a ground-up kitchen and first-floor transformation. Here's a detailed breakdown of everything we delivered:

Structural Work

  • Load-bearing wall removal: We safely removed two walls separating the kitchen from the dining and living rooms, including one load-bearing wall. In its place, we installed engineered LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) beams to transfer the structural load, allowing for a completely open floor plan without compromising the integrity of the home.

Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MEP) Upgrades

  • Full replacement of kitchen plumbing: new supply lines and drain relocation to accommodate the new island sink placement.
  • Electrical system upgrade: new dedicated circuits for high-draw appliances including double wall ovens, refrigerator, dishwasher, and wine cooler; upgraded panel capacity where required.
  • Enhanced ventilation: installation of a high-CFM range hood system with proper duct routing to exterior (designed to handle serious cooking demands).
  • Recessed in-ceiling speakers rough-in.

Cabinetry & Storage

  • Full custom two-tone cabinetry: flat-front (slab-door) upper cabinets in crisp matte white, paired with warm natural oak lower cabinets and wall-height pantry towers — a design choice that adds visual depth while keeping the space bright and contemporary.
  • Floor-to-ceiling white cabinetry on the refrigerator wall, seamlessly integrating the appliance panel-ready refrigerator for a built-in look.
  • Open floating oak shelves in the wet bar area for display and everyday access.
  • Soft-close hinges and integrated pull hardware throughout for a clean, handleless aesthetic.

Kitchen Island

  • Large waterfall-edge kitchen island with a thick-slab white quartz countertop, featuring subtle veining that adds elegance without visual noise.
  • Island base clad in matching warm oak cabinetry with ample storage.
  • Integrated undermount sink with a gold-tone pull-down faucet — a refined contrast against the white quartz.
  • Under-island LED toe kick lighting for a floating effect and ambient warmth.
  • Seating for 4–5 with custom dark leather bar stools on matte black metal frames.

Countertops & Backsplash

  • Perimeter countertops in matching white quartz, consistent with the island for a unified, high-end look.
  • Backsplash: full slab quartz backsplash on the main cooking wall for a seamless, easy-to-clean surface — no grout lines, pure elegance.

Appliances

  • Built-in double wall oven (stainless steel).
  • Integrated panel-ready refrigerator.
  • Under-counter wine refrigerator in the wet bar zone.
  • High-performance ventilation hood, integrated into the cabinetry.

Wet Bar / Beverage Station

  • Dedicated beverage and entertaining zone adjacent to the dining area.
  • Oak lower cabinetry with wine fridge, floating shelves above, and quartz countertop.
  • Styled with open shelving for glassware and decorative objects.

Windows & Doors

  • Sliding glass door installation: We installed a large-format black-framed sliding glass door system that opens the dining and kitchen area directly to the newly built deck — creating seamless indoor-outdoor living.
  • Horizontal slot window (window backsplash): A custom low-profile horizontal window was cut into the exterior wall directly above the kitchen work surface, flooding the cooking zone with natural daylight — a functional and architectural feature rarely seen in residential kitchens.

Flooring

  • Wide-plank white oak hardwood flooring throughout the entire open-plan area — lightly bleached finish that reflects light, making the space feel larger and airier. Consistent flooring across kitchen, dining, and living zones reinforces the open-concept flow.

Ceiling & Lighting Design

  • Coffered ceiling detail with integrated LED cove lighting in the kitchen zone — adds architectural interest and warm ambient illumination.
  • Full recessed lighting layout throughout the open floor plan.
  • Statement wire pendant light (Vertigo-style) over the dining table — a sculptural focal point.
  • Linear black LED pendant over the kitchen island.
  • Under-cabinet LED lighting above the countertop work zones.

Dining Area

  • Dark-framed rectangular dining table for 8, paired with upholstered cream/beige armchairs — a warm, sophisticated contrast to the white and oak kitchen palette.

Walls & Trim

  • Walls finished in premium white paint (eggshell finish) throughout — clean, bright, and timeless.
  • All trim, baseboards, and transitions refinished to match the new aesthetic.

Built to Code: Permits & Compliance

At NextDay Remodeling, we never cut corners on compliance. And a project of this complexity demanded full permitting and inspection at every phase. All structural work, including the load-bearing wall removal and LVL beam installation, was engineered, permitted, and inspected by Fairfax County building officials. Electrical upgrades were completed by licensed electricians and passed all required inspections. Plumbing work was performed by licensed plumbers in full accordance with Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC). Mechanical ventilation was designed and installed to meet IRC and local code requirements. Every stage of this project was reviewed and approved, giving our clients not only a beautiful home, but one that is fully compliant, insurable, and ready for resale.

The Result: One Space. Endless Possibility

The transformation is remarkable. Where there was once a dark, boxed-in kitchen, there is now an expansive, light-drenched open-concept living environment that serves as the true heart of the home. The kitchen, dining room, and living room breathe together as one unified space, connected by wide-plank hardwood floors, a consistent warm-white palette, and thoughtful design details that reward a second look. The two-tone cabinetry, waterfall quartz island, custom lighting, and indoor-outdoor glass door system deliver a level of finish typically seen in luxury new construction — achieved here through expert remodeling. This Falls Church home now has the kitchen its owners always envisioned: functional, beautiful, and built for real life.
