Whole Home Remodel in Alexandria, VA, Scott St – Project #37

Some houses don't need a refresh. They need a reckoning. This Alexandria property had good bones, a desirable corner lot, and decades of deferred potential. What it needed was a team willing to strip everything back and rebuild it the right way. That's exactly what we did. This full home remodeling project touched every system, every surface, and every square foot of a 2,149 sq ft, 4-level split — transforming a dated mid-century structure into a light-filled, open, fully modernized home.

Browse the gallery above. Then read on for the full story.

The Scope: Nothing Was Left Untouched

This wasn't a cosmetic update or a room-by-room refresh. This was a full gut renovation — walls opened to the studs, systems replaced entirely, layout reconfigured where the original floor plan simply wasn't working anymore.

The exterior work alone tells you how comprehensive this project was:

  • Complete roof replacement
  • New windows, entry doors, and exterior siding
  • New fascia, soffits, and gutters
  • An 80-foot concrete driveway with parking for four vehicles
  • A new Trex deck designed for privacy and outdoor living

Inside, the mechanical systems were upgraded from scratch: full electrical rewire with dedicated circuits sized for modern appliances, replacement of supply lines and drain stacks, updated HVAC equipment, and a new water heater. Every phase of this whole home renovation was permitted, inspected, and signed off by the City of Alexandria. Our clients received documentation at every milestone, not just our word that the work was done right.

Reconfiguring the Main Floor: Structure First, Finishes Second

The most impactful decision on this project happened before a single cabinet was hung or a tile was set. The original first floor was divided into separate, closed-off rooms that made the house feel smaller and darker than it needed to be.

We removed the load-bearing walls separating the kitchen, dining room, and living area. That required engineering, proper LVL beam installation to carry the redistributed load, and the kind of structural work that doesn't show up in listing photos. However, it absolutely shows up in how the house feels to live in. The result is a continuous open-concept space across all three zones, unified by uninterrupted light hardwood flooring and consistent finishes throughout.

A skylight cut directly above the kitchen brought in natural light that the space had never had. Exposed ceiling beams were cleaned up and refinished, keeping the original character of the home while making it feel intentional rather than dated. Recessed LED lighting was installed throughout every level.

Kitchen Remodeling

With the layout open, the kitchen remodeling scope focused on building a workspace that could actually function at the center of the home.

White shaker-style cabinetry runs on three sides in a U-shaped configuration, floor-to-ceiling, with matte black hardware throughout. White quartz countertops provide a durable, low-maintenance work surface that holds up under daily use. A beige subway tile backsplash in a running bond pattern covers the full wall between upper and lower cabinets, with integrated LED strip lighting underneath for both task and ambient use.

The appliance package is a complete stainless steel suite — French door refrigerator, freestanding gas range with overhead microwave, and built-in dishwasher — all on dedicated electrical circuits. A custom geometric accent wall anchors the dining zone where the dividing wall once stood, giving the open space a clear visual identity without breaking the flow.

Bathroom Remodeling

Both bathrooms were handled as full bathroom remodeling projects — not upgrades, not refreshes. Demolition went down to the framing. Subfloor and wall cavities received waterproof membrane treatment before any finish material was installed, protecting the structure for the long term.

The primary bath features 12x24 gray porcelain tile carried continuously from the floor up through the shower surround, creating a cohesive, spa-like enclosure. The vanity is a dark charcoal cabinet paired with a white quartz top — a contrast that gives the room weight and sophistication. A frameless glass shower door opens the space visually, and a custom recessed niche inside the shower keeps the interior clean and organized.

A bold black-and-white geometric accent tile on the vanity wall adds personality without competing with the rest of the design. Both bathrooms passed City of Alexandria inspections, and all plumbing and electrical work was brought to current code.

The Lower Level and Supporting Spaces

The finished basement was updated as a flexible recreational space with a walk-out side entrance, keeping it connected to the yard while functioning independently from the main living area. A dedicated storage and utility room was retained. Off the kitchen, a separate laundry room with rear yard access adds convenience. The attached garage (relatively uncommon in this neighborhood) includes a separate workshop room.

What a Real Home Remodel Looks Like

A home remodel at this level isn't about selecting finishes from a catalog. It's about solving problems that were built into the original structure, upgrading systems that can't be patched their way to reliability, and making decisions early in the process that determine how everything else performs for the next 30 years.

This project is what home remodeling general contractor work actually looks like when the scope is honest, the execution is thorough, and nothing gets skipped because it's inconvenient.
