Basement Finishing in Falls Church, VA, Cofer Rd – Project #47

When this Arlington homeowner decided to do a basement finishing as part of a full whole-home remodel, the goal was clear — no half measures. The basement had to become a fully functional, livable level: waterproofed from the ground up, finished from scratch, and designed to match the rest of the renovated home.

What we built below grade is one of the most complete basement transformations in our Northern Virginia portfolio: a wide-open entertainment space with a custom wet bar, a full bathroom, egress bedrooms, laundry, and a walkout exit.

What the Homeowner Was Up Against

Before we broke ground, the basement was doing what most unfinished basements in Arlington do - sitting empty, collecting humidity, and quietly wasting hundreds of square feet of livable space. Here's what the client needed to solve:

  • Moisture & water intrusion: The existing basement had no waterproofing system. With Northern Virginia's clay-heavy soil and seasonal groundwater pressure, finishing without addressing this first would have been a ticking clock.
  • Unusable square footage: The space had no framing, no lighting, no flooring — nothing. It was raw concrete and exposed mechanicals, used mostly for storage.
  • No bathroom access from the lower level: With guests and a growing family, having zero bathroom access in the basement was a real inconvenience.
  • No legal bedrooms: The basement had no egress windows, meaning no room could be legally classified as a bedroom — limiting both livability and the home's resale value.
  • No laundry room: Washer and dryer connections didn't exist on this level, creating unnecessary traffic on the main floors.
  • No walkout access: There was no exterior exit from the basement, which affected both convenience and safety code compliance.

What We Did

This project was part of a larger full-home remodel, and the basement scope was extensive. Here's what the NextDay Remodeling crew delivered:

  • Interior waterproofing system: Installed a full perimeter interior drainage system with a high-capacity sump pump to eliminate any risk of moisture intrusion before any finishing work began.
  • Rough-in plumbing: Laid all underground plumbing for the wet bar, full bathroom, and laundry room, including drains, supply lines, and proper venting.
  • Framing & drywall: Complete framing of all walls, rooms, and closets, followed by drywall installation and finishing throughout.
  • Egress windows: Cut and installed egress windows in the bedroom areas to bring the space up to IRC code, making rooms legally habitable.
  • Walkout installation: Added an exterior walkout exit from the basement level, improving both safety egress and everyday convenience.
  • Custom wet bar: Built and finished a full wet bar along the main wall with upper and lower cabinetry in a warm taupe flat-panel finish, white subway tile backsplash, under-cabinet LED lighting, open shelving, a sink, and a built-in beverage/wine cooler.
  • Full bathroom: Roughed in and finished a full bathroom with a walk-in shower.
  • Laundry room: Dedicated laundry space with all hookups and utility infrastructure.
  • LVP flooring: Wide-plank light blonde luxury vinyl plank throughout the open areas — durable, moisture-resistant, and visually expansive.
  • Recessed lighting: Full recessed lighting layout across the entire ceiling for bright, even illumination with a clean, modern look.
  • Painting & trim: Crisp white walls, ceilings, and trim throughout to maximize light and create a cohesive finished look.

What We Delivered

The finished basement is now the entertainment centerpiece of the home. A large open rec room anchors the layout with the custom wet bar as its focal point, a game area, and a comfortable lounge space for family and guests. Behind it: two separate rooms with proper egress, a full bathroom, a dedicated laundry room, a storage closet, and a utility area. The space went from a liability to a legitimate, fully livable lower level — adding significant square footage, functionality, and long-term value to this Arlington home.
