The Challenge
Small bathroom remodeling projects in Arlington often come with technical hurdles hidden behind the walls. The homeowner needed us to address several specific functional issues during this bathroom renovation:
- Outdated Infrastructure: The original drain lines and supply pipes were past their prime.
- Moisture Damage: Older ventilation systems in these homes are frequently inadequate, leading to long-term humidity issues.
- Limited Floor Space: The layout needed to feel open while still accommodating a full vanity, toilet, and shower.
- Subfloor Stability: We needed to inspect the joists to verify the floor could handle the weight of new tile and stone.
What We Did
- NextDay Remodeling managed every phase of the build — from the initial demo to the final coat of paint.
- Full Demolition: We cleared out all old materials to inspect the home's skeleton. This step is necessary to verify the framing is straight and dry.
- Utility Modernization: We replaced the old plumbing with new PVC drains and PEX supply lines.
- Waterproofing & Airflow: A professional-grade waterproof membrane was applied in the shower area (to prevent leaks). We also installed a high-capacity exhaust fan.
- Custom Tile Installation: We laid a deep blue-gray subway tile on the shower walls. For the floor, we selected a light hexagonal mosaic. The smaller grout lines in the mosaic provide excellent slip resistance.
- Shower and Vanity: The install included a glass corner enclosure, built-in niches for storage, a new vanity, and a modern toilet.
Permits and Code Compliance
We handled the entire permitting process through the local building department. Every step of our work follows Virginia residential codes. We coordinated the rough-in and final inspections to verify that the plumbing and electrical work met all safety standards. Having a local inspector sign off on the project protects the homeowner's investment. It also confirms that the work was done to professional standards.
The Final Result
The renovated bathroom is a bright, professional-grade space that balances bold colors with classic hardware. The contrast between the dark accent tile and the brushed gold fixtures creates an upscale look. By utilizing a glass shower door and a crisp white vanity, we kept the room feeling open. This project is a great example of how quality craftsmanship can turn a small, outdated room into a highlight of the home.
