Bathroom Remodel – Replace Tub with Shower in Arlington, VA, 1st St – Project #40

As part of a full home renovation in Arlington, our team completed this master bathroom remodel to improve the layout and daily utility of the space. The original setup felt cramped due to an oversized, rarely used bathtub that dominated the room. We focused on creating a high-performance environment that balances clean aesthetics with modern plumbing standards. Take a look at the project photos below to see how we changed the feel of this master suite.

The Project Challenges

  • Wasted Square Footage: The existing bathtub took up a large portion of the floor plan - an impractical layout for many modern homeowners.
  • Infrastructure Updates: Older supply lines and drainage required a complete rough-in replacement to support the new fixtures.
  • Storage Deficit: A single vanity wasn't enough for two people. We needed to reconfigure the wall to accommodate a larger double vanity.
  • Uncomfortably Cold Floors: The existing tile stayed freezing during Northern Virginia winters. The client requested a permanent solution (specifically a high-efficiency electric radiant floor heating system).

What We Did

  • Stripped the entire room down to the wood framing and subfloor. This allowed us to inspect the structure and prep for new mechanicals.
  • Ran new sewer and water lines to accommodate the shifted layout.
  • Installed a professional waterproofing system across the entire shower footprint and floor.
  • Set a light oak double vanity with a quartz top and dual undermount sinks.
  • Layed down an electric heating system beneath the new anthracite floor tiles.
  • Tiled the walk-in shower with vertical marble-look porcelain and installed custom accessory niches.
  • Fitted a sliding glass shower door with matte black hardware to maintain an open feel.

Building Codes and Inspections

We performed all work according to Arlington County building codes (including all necessary plumbing and electrical permits). Each stage of the construction passed local inspections to verify that the home meets current safety and performance standards. Using high-quality materials and following code requirements helps protect the long-term value of the property.

The Final Result

The finished space is a bright, modern master bathroom that maximizes every square inch of the footprint. The marble-patterned wall tile, which we installed vertically to give the room more height, adds a sophisticated look that is easy to clean. By replacing the tub with a custom walk-in shower and adding a double vanity, we provided the homeowners with a much more functional morning routine. The heated floors and updated ventilation make the room comfortable year-round.

Part of a Whole-Home Transformation

This master suite was one of four bathrooms we renovated during this specific home remodeling project. We worked on all four spaces simultaneously to maintain a consistent style and finish quality throughout the entire house. You can see the other three bathrooms below to see how we applied similar modern materials to different layouts.
